Importing Amusement Rides: Shipping, Customs & Installation

The ride you bought is only half the project. Getting it across the ocean, through customs and standing on your slab is the other half — here is how it works.

Step 1: Understand How Rides Are Packed

Factories disassemble rides into container-optimized modules: tower sections, track segments, gondolas, décor crates and control cabinets. Every model lists a packing volume — for example “1 × 40’ HC” or “3 × 40’ HC + 1 × 40’ BOX”. Ask for the packing drawing early; it determines your freight budget and your crane/foam protection needs.

Step 2: Choose Your Incoterm

TermWhat the factory coversBest when
EXWNothing — you collect from the factoryYou have a freight agent in China
FOBDelivery onto the vessel at the Chinese portYou want control of ocean freight
CIFOcean freight + insurance to your portYou want one price to your port
DDPEverything incl. import clearance & duty (select markets)You want to receive a ready-to-install ride

First-time importers usually choose CIF; experienced operators with a customs broker choose FOB. DDP is possible to select markets — ask early.

Step 3: Prepare Customs Documents

Your broker will need: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and any conformity documents your market requires (CE documentation, inspection certificates). Most amusement rides classify under HS 9505/9508 — confirm the rate with your broker before ordering, as duty and VAT are payable in your country on top of the ride price.

Step 4: Plan the Site While the Ride Is at Sea

Foundation curing is on the critical path: start civil works the moment foundation drawings are approved — a 28-day concrete cure can run in parallel with a 30–60 day production lead time. Also prepare: power supply at the ride’s rated kW, level access for trucks and a crane, fencing, and operator rooms if required by local code.

Step 5: Choose an Installation Model

  • Supervision only — your local crew builds under a factory engineer’s direction. Most economical for simple rides.
  • Supervised installation — factory engineers lead key stages (tower erection, track alignment, electricals) with local labor.
  • Turnkey team — the factory dispatches a full crew and tools; ideal for coasters, towers and wheels where alignment is critical.

Step 6: Commissioning and Handover

After mechanical completion: electrical hook-up, no-load test, loaded test cycles, safety device verification, operator training and documentation handover (test records, manuals, maintenance schedule). Photograph everything — your insurer and regulator will ask.

XL Rides Export Support

We quote FOB/CIF/DDP, provide packing drawings with every offer, and dispatch English-speaking engineers worldwide. Typical flow from deposit to handover for a family ride: production 30–60 days, ocean freight 20–40 days, installation 5–15 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many containers does an amusement ride need?

Kiddie and family rides often fit 1×20’ to 1×40’ HC; coasters and large wheels need 2–10+ containers. The exact volume is stated per model in your quotation.

What Incoterm should a first-time buyer choose?

CIF is the safest first step: the factory arranges ocean freight and insurance to your port while you handle customs with a local broker.

Can the factory install the ride in my country?

Yes — XL Rides dispatches English-speaking engineers for supervision or turnkey installation, and provides remote video support during your crew’s build.

Buying a ride is a 10-year relationship with a factory. Choose the partner, not just the price.
