The Standards Landscape
The reference design standard for fixed amusement rides in Europe is EN 13814 (“Fairground and amusement park machinery and structures — Safety”), complemented by the EU Machinery Directive/Regulation for CE marking. North America often references ASTM F2291 (design) and F24 (ride safety) standards, while many other markets accept design to EN/ASTM plus local registration. A capable manufacturer designs to one of these frameworks and documents every calculation.
What “CE” Should Actually Mean on a Ride
CE is a self-declaration by the manufacturer backed by a technical file: risk assessment, structural calculations, material certificates, electrical safety evidence, and instructions. When a supplier says “we have CE”, ask what is inside the file. Production Quality: ISO 9001 and Material Control
Design is only half the story. Consistent production quality comes from a certified quality management system (ISO 9001), mill test certificates traceable to steel heat numbers, audited FRP resin suppliers, and coded welders on structural joints. These controls determine whether ride #500 is as safe as ride #1.
Weld Inspection and NDT
The highest-stress joints — coaster track welds, tower connections, wheel spokes — should be 100% non-destructively tested: ultrasonic testing (UT) for internal defects, magnetic particle testing (MT) for surface cracks. Ask which joints are NDT-tested and request the inspection report with your shipment.
Third-Party Inspection Before Shipment
You can (and should) put an independent pair of eyes on your ride: TÜV, SGS, BV or your nominated inspector can review materials, witness the load test and verify safety devices at the factory. Costs are modest relative to the ride value, and factories confident in their QC welcome this — suspicious ones do not.
Operator Responsibilities After Handover
- Daily pre-opening inspections and function tests per the manufacturer checklist.
- Periodic NDT re-inspection per your national program (typically annually for high-stress components).
- Operator training and recorded refreshers; restricted access to control systems.
- Maintenance log with genuine spare parts — never substitute structural or brake components.
